Introducing Houston Chiropractor & Nutrition Diplomate, Dr. Paula Howell

The Preferred Houston Chiropractor

Because so many of my family are in the medical profession it was hard to believe how much can be accomplished without drugs or surgery. The miracles I’ve seen in my practice outside of the medical model could fill a book.

I originally was inspired to be a healing practitioner after working in a hospital as a nurse’s aid when I was a teenager. I guess it runs in the family as my mom was a nurse and my uncle a doctor. I simply loved and even craved helping people feel better. I originally chose nursing as my profession but became disappointed and disillusioned with the ineffectiveness of the drug therapy and frankly shocked at seeing the side effects of pharmaceuticals which were not addressing the root cause of problems. After my husband had a back injury and was healed by a chiropractor the profession chose me. The chiropractor who helped my husband convinced me that I would be a great chiropractor despite my small size. The chiropractic profession embraced everything I believed in.

I initially attended Wichita State University before taking time to have a family always knowing I wanted to continue my education in a health related profession. After deciding to be a chiropractor I visited Texas Chiropractic College and was very impressed by the anatomy lab. They displayed actual cadavers with the nervous system exposed. I was assured after my education there I would know all those nerves.

After graduating from TCC, I have continued my education taking classes too numerous to count to further my knowledge in nutrition and why the body continues to break down in the presence of stress. I received my diplomate in nutrition from the American Clinical Board of Nutrition in 2003. In 1998 I was the in the first class to be certified in Neuroemotional Technique (founded by Dr. Scott Walker). I credit Dr. Walker for inspiring me to become the a well rounded and capable doctor who loves a challenge.

My philosophy is to treat a patient as an individual with love and compassion that is felt from the moment they walk in the front door. We go to great lengths to insure our staff has the same attitude. Our goal is to get to the bottom of our problem or complaint utilizing our many diagnostic and treatment tools. We only want patients who are ready to get well so our practice is not for everyone. My greatest moments have been when a patient has said, “I’m so glad I found a doctor like you because you have made my life so much better.” I love educating my patients. In our Houston office we have bi-monthly seminars (free of charge) because there is so much misinformation out there and people need to know the truth.

Warren, my loving, supportive husband and I have been married for 32 years. I am blessed to have a wonderful son, Shane, who I practice with at AHM. Dr. Shane and his wife, Angela, have given me two precious granddaughters, Grace and Lily. I also have a beautiful and talented daughter, Vanessa, who gave birth to my first grandson, Koen, in January ’09. Being a grandmother is even better than I have ever expected. I love music and still take piano lessons to improve my skill and find it a great way to relax. When I have time I love to cook, go dancing and snow ski.

I get at least one chiropractic adjustment per week and my doctor, Dr. Shane, checks me for NECs (Neuroemotional Complexes). I’m positive I take more nutritional supplements than any of my patients so I can stay healthy. I hate being sick. At least twice per year, my husband and I do the SP Purification, a 21 day detox, to add to the insurance of staying disease free. Most mornings I am either at the gym doing my PACE workout or on my reformer doing my Pilates routine. Even on the weekends I seldom go a day without some kind of exercise because I believe it is so vital for health. Sometimes I am tempted by those bad vices of diet but mostly follow a Mediterranean-style diet eating at least five servings of vegetables and fruits per day. A protein drink is my breakfast during the week. If I had to do it all over again I would not have vaccinated my children as I feel that it impairs the development of the immune system and exposes children to many toxic metals and unnecessary and dangerous substances. I personally have not had an antibiotic in over 15 years and also do not take over the counter pain relievers. Antibiotics never kill all the intended bacteria and destroy most of the good flora. Pain is a symptom that something is wrong so I become an investigator to find the cause. This is so different from my upbringing which was to visit our family GP for every ache and pain where prescription drugs were always prescribed.

Keeping a positive attitude has played a big part of my health. I frequently read or listen to CDs to keep me from focusing my attention on the negative and the unavoidable stresses of life. It also helps to love what you do and feel like you are helping so many.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our site. I am an excellent listener and hope I get the opportunity to meet you in person to discuss your specific health challenge. Give us a call in our Houston office or email me at the link below.

Dr. Howell Asks some important questions of interest to Houston residents - Chiropractor Houston Dr. Howell Asks...

How could chiropractic help a stomach problem?
Chiropractic works by locating and reducing areas of the spine compromising nerve communications between your brain and your body. If nerves to or from your stomach are irritated, your stomach won't work right. Chiropractors find the source of the interference, reduce it and allow your body to work as designed.
What's the difference between maintenance, prevention and wellness?
Maintenance chiropractic care is an attempt to keep a dynamic, ever-changing and adapting organism (you) in a static relationship with your environment. Preventive chiropractic care is mostly about early detection. Wellness chiropractic care is an attempt to optimize our health and be all that you were designed to be.
